Papers

What a loaded truck needs.

  1. A cross-border road transport permit for a South African truck carrying goods (C-BRTA).

  2. The driver's passport and the truck's registration papers.

  3. The customs declarations for the load, done by your clearing agent before the truck arrives, with invoices and the road manifest.

  4. For goods passing through to a third country, the transit document for each country crossed.

A general list, not legal advice; your clearing agent confirms what your load needs. Sources: C-BRTA; ZRA, goods in transit.

Less waiting

Three habits that save hours.

  1. Have the clearing agent lodge the declarations before the truck leaves the depot; a truck that arrives before its papers waits in the queue twice.

  2. Plan the arrival, not just the crossing: a delay on the N1 at Musina costs the same diesel and driver hours as a delay at the gate.

  3. Keep every slip from both sides. Fills in Rand and in US dollars belong on the same truck's fuel sheet, or the km per litre for the trip makes no sense.

Other posts and their hours: border post hours for trucks.

Every slip, every truck

A cross-border trip leaves slips in two currencies.

Rand and US dollars on the same trip, from stations on both sides of the border. Your drivers WhatsApp a photo of each slip, and by 7 the next morning your fuel sheet is checked, one tab per truck, with anything that doesn't add up in red: more litres than the tank holds, the same slip twice, km per litre far off the truck's usual.
