Tidy your Downloads folder
One click moves PDFs and images older than a week out of Downloads into their own folders. Nothing is deleted.
Build the shortcut
- In Finder, create two folders:
Documents/From DownloadsandPictures/From Downloads. - Open Shortcuts, click +, and name it
Tidy Downloads. - Add Get Contents of Folder, and choose Downloads.
- Add Filter Files. Set the filters to:
- File Extension is
pdf - Last Modified Date is not in the last 7 days
- File Extension is
- Add Move File and set the destination to
Documents/From Downloads. If it shows an overwrite option, leave it off so no file is replaced. - Add a second Get Contents of Folder (Downloads) and Filter Files, this time with File Extension is
jpg, jpeg, pngorheic(add each with Add Filter, and set the filter to match Any), plus the same 7-day rule. - Add Move File to
Pictures/From Downloads, again without overwrite. - Click the i button and turn on Pin in Menu Bar.
Run it
Click it in the menu bar once a week. If your macOS version shows an Automation section in Shortcuts (newer versions do), you can schedule it there, for example every Sunday at 18:00.
Why it helps
Downloads is where files go to be lost. This keeps the last week there and puts the rest where you will look for it.
